The following are the results for the 2005 USA Judo National Championships
held at the Pavilion Convention Center, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Nearly 300
athletes from all over the USA competed in the first day of the event.
The event is also the World Team Trials for Judo to select the representative
to the World Championships in Cairo, Egypt next September. The procedure was
that if the #1 seeded athlete won the nationals, then that athlete would be
named to the World Team. If another athlete won, then that athlete and the
#1 seeded athlete would participate in a best of three "fight-off"
to determine the World Team members. In three cases a fight-off was necessary.
In the Men's 73kg, Chuck Jefferson, San Jose, Calif. won the National
Championship over Ryan Reser of Colo. Springs. Reser then won the best of
three fight off to make the world team.
In Men's 90kg, Dariusz Mikolajczak, Brooklyn, New York, won the Championship
and then won a two of three fight-off against Shintaro Higashi of Scarsdale,
New York, to make the World Team.
In women's +78 kg, Heidi Moore, Denver, Colo., won the National Championship,
but lost a fight-off to Garlyn Celestin, Brooklyn, NY. Celestin, was named
to the World Team.
